The Screen as Axis in the Future of the Smartphone

Speaking of innovation in the industry of smartphones sometimes outlines a kind of technological roof, in reference to the many ‘needs’ that these devices already replace and how complicated it can be to innovate and improve not only invented already. That’s why any evolution in this sense, to incorporate a new feature added a new function, is interesting both for the end user and for the market, and it seems that the industry is focusing on screens.

Thus, after a period in which it seemed to be centered on the possibilities offered by the different types of sensors so as to improve their sensitivity and application, by 2015 we have seen that the screens have become the new point to exploit. Although apart from the hardware itself, which is trying and getting (and the really interesting thing) is to change the user hereinafter experience, more than a turning point in the cases of at least an additive.

Motorola: that aren’t broken more screens

A few weeks ago we were talking about that in Spain the screens break was the most common reason for to carry the mobile service, winning by a landslide to the rest of incidents. Seems that statistic extends on a larger scale, or at least I see in one of the promotional videos of the Motorola DROID Turbo 2, which indicates that one-third of the screens are broken (and that in 30% of cases not repaired).

Here the improvement is based on what Motorola have referred to as screen Shatterproof, the trade term to designate this greater resistance screen which at the moment only this model presents. Which confers this resistance are the various layers that make up the flexible AMOLED panel and so it was in the presentation (in which dropped a terminal from a considerable height) the improvement works.

Apple: Touch key

Talking about what is the date of public presentation, which in this sense came forward (though not in smartphones) was Apple Force Touch in your Apple smartWatch with trackpads for computers. Although primitive and limited, incorporate this property in the clock already guessed that I would not stay there and that almost in a compulsory manner is something that we would see in the product the company star. More still when that rumored increase in thickness in 0.2 mm began to be in all pools for new iPhones.

And so it was, in September of this year we saw in the hypnotic videos of the presentation that the new iPhones 6s event and 6s Plus incorporated something similar, because even though betrayed by Craigh Federighi the subconscious to speak of this it was not Force Touch, but 3D Touch. Although the Foundation of both technologies and importantly, its function is basically the same: Add a third dimension in the usuario-dispositivo interaction.

But mind the difference or is subject of nomenclatures and marketing? Strictly Yes, indeed was something that spoke in Wired. Although both lie in terms of hardware to the Taptic Engine and to the structure of the screen, according to the patents we see that the 3D Touch has one higher level of sensitivity that the solution for the Apple Watch, reacting more quickly and allowing more shares according to the firmness that applies pressure. In Applesfera already spoke of this difference in the experience of use between the devices as well as the possibilities.

Here the key, and what can become a differentiating factor or bottleneck, software part respond. I.e., that both the House as third-party developers take advantage of this and take advantage of shortcut menus and to how fast that allows shares this feature.

Huawei: from 2015 weighing apples

Beyond the imaginative that we can be with our theories to which Huawei chose this fruit and not one to show his innovation in the Huawei Mate S, the fact is that by date your Force Touch went on the market before (because it is called exactly the same). The technology of the Chinese manufacturer is located halfway between the two that we mentioned Apple, since if it is a pressure sensitive screen although function is somewhat more limited.

What we can do in this case is Zoom on images and games, emulate the navigation buttons, customize corners or what they mentioned weight (something whose real utility is perhaps questionable in practice). An enhancement that appears to improve the experience although for the moment we don’t see a change in the interaction between the user and the system (not at least as remarkable) as in the case of 3D Touch and iOS 9, featuring shortcut menus and fast action that in general (and not only promptly) involve complete actions in a quick and easy way.

However, as we were the first to put it on the market and if we take care of your operating system at the moment they are the only Android that have incorporated the sensitivity to pressure factory, anticipating what from Mountain View to progress in this field. Something that is advantageous or not as look: Okay being alone in something and that improvements have the seal of the brand, but There is no official support for developers by Google (in the case of iOS third developers have the API of the House).

A fun future

Huawei and Apple have presented their proposals, but this year we have seen that other manufacturers seem to be preparing their proposals also in this sense. A few months ago from Synaptics they had Clear Force, a technology that would allow an interaction similar to which is being seen in iOS and that, as indicated, We will see in any of the terminals of the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi. On the other hand, a few weeks ago published a patent by Samsung from last year which outlined a change in interaction also by pressure, although it seemed to be aimed at the keyboard rather than the layer of software in general.

So it’s technologies recent wedge or to come, but we always tend to think towards where they drive these innovations, and in the case of Apple, patents give us sometimes small suggestions. We are talking about in the first place of the arrangement of the elements of the system can change, and can take advantage of new gestures or, better said, pressures (peek and pop in the case of iOS) to preview the content and showing us options, or to directly enter.

They pointed at TheNextWeb the possible disappearance in the long term from the menu type “Hamburger” (the icon of three parallel lines indicating that it hides a menu with options). Also discussed the involvement at the level of the learning curve of the user with the system, since it would add some degree of difficulty, it is usual that they incorporate tutorials for the new user in these changes.

The evolution of this new level in the responses by the system arises opening doors to actions that so far only I had seen, in the case of iOS, in concepts or obtained by jailbreak tweaks. Perhaps the Control Center becomes something more functional, allowing options to be deployed to connect to any wireless network or any Bluetooth device without lifting your finger, to cite one possibility.

Speaking of the iPhone, if we also take into account what claimed DigiTimes about integrating the fingerprint reader (something that finally we didn’t see on iPhones 6s), the inclusion of 3D Touch and the absence of physical button It could mean a future without “click”. I.e., that both unlocking, like multitasking, and the return to the springboard does not need this mechanical action and were a combination of gestures and pressures. We will see if in 2016 screens are still the basis of both a House and other improvements.
